Magic! I was driving along behind yet another diplomatic license and wished I'd bought one of those little books which told you which was which....(having been the owner of diplomatic tags
myself in Bombay as a member of Uncle Sam's diplomatic corps, I can identify with that totally
baseless feeling of being someone different,)! Anyway, it occurred to me that there must be something on the web....and, God bless you, there you were! ManyThanks! Bonnie B

Just thought I'd post a minor correction - WKRP did not get its name
from that station, although it might appear so - the creator of the show came up with WKRP
because it spells "crap" (this tidbit came out of the WKRP in Cincinnati book
"America's Favorite Radio Station". It was also mentioned that Cincinnati was
used, because "it sounded good coming after WKRP".
Senior year of college ('77), at the Univ. of Cincinnati, I lived two blocks from
WKRC,
one of several Cincy radio stations. The show obviously got its name from that station.
Also, the first episode of "WKRP" was written by Casey Piotrowski, a DJ at
WSAI,
another Cincy station.
Gary Sandy grew up in Dayton, OH, my hometown. Gordon Jump is
also from Ohio.
BTW, I, too was extremely taken by Jan S.
Just found your site...awesome!!! I too had heard Jan was living in the Halifax area.
When she was married to Brolin, they bought a summer home near the Alexander Graham Bell
estate on the Bras d'or lakes in Cape Breton, N.S.. Don't no who got that in the divorce.

I agree that Jan Smithers lives some where in the Maritimes because her son plays
bantam hockey and played against my friends sons team while she was watching. I remember
this because he said she got up for a Tim Hortons Coffee and she had a great
tush.
nice site, many memories of long ago, after seeing what is on tv now...
Jan is
great from the 1st episode on..
I don't know what Jan is like but I can tell she does reside in Nova Scotia, Canada and
I did see her four or five times with a little girl (age approx 10 with long dark hair)
while I was in a bank. She looked pretty damn beautiful to me. To the person who said
Jan's not in Canada either your really wrong or she has a twin sister.
Just stumbled across your Tribute to Jan Smithers. I think its great. I always liked
Jan best, or at least more than Jennifer. I like to watch WKRP whenever I can catch it,
but I did miss the N@N marathon. Oh Well, Maybe next time. Moon Mullins
I know her, she not a nice person and never lived in Canada. She left
Brolin. He hadn't
Streisand for sometime after they split up. She's a very EVIL lady. Only if you people
knew her like she really is and not by the t.v. show she was on. People are nothing like
what you see on T.V.
great looking lady, great lookin' website... if you guys know of where to get some wav
files of wkrp, let me know at marko_obx@hotmail.com
I ran across your entry for JS while looking at the Cincinnati page. I was glad that
someone else had the same opinion of her as I did, but come on guys she obviously wants to
be left alone, not hunted down. Leave well enough alone and remember her as she was,
Beautifully Intelligent, Shy, Unassuming, and just totally Captivating. Hating Brolin is
enough to make anyone happy. e7mabry@msn.com
I'd like to say that yours is the best fansite I have run across on the 'net. Jan's
resilient popularity speaks volumes, I think, about us American men. We truly do have
great taste, don't we? I am amazed at the plasticity so many women in this country pursue
in the forlorn hope of becoming ever more beautiful. These women might do well to view old
WKRP episodes, and take lessons in pert and non-pretentious sexiness from Jan/Bailey. I am
a bit disturbed by the recent guestbook comment by the person who claims to "know
Jan." I've a feeling, however, that the anonymous critique is from a woman...one who
will forever find herself puzzled by, and jealous of, the ideal that is Jan/Bailey.
Hi. Great site for Jan, and like someone else has already commented on, you ARE a great
writer! I was a huge fan of WKRP during it's original airing, and now that it's back on
the Comedy Network, I must start tapping it. It's on at 4:30pm for me (Toronto area) so
I'm not home to watch it. Just yesterday on the Internet Movie Database, I ran across Gary
Sandy's site. A few weeks ago, I recognized his voice from another room, when an episode
of "Diagnosis Murder" came on! Happy to see he's still acting. Both Gary and Jan
were my favorites. Keep up the great work. Stacey
Sorry, but Loni has chunks floating around in her laundry water after washing her dirty
underwear that are larger than Jan Smithers
I know Jan Smithers, she left Brolin after she spent all his money. Brolin didn't meet
Streisand for at least a year after she left him. She was engaged twice and both guys left
her. He has never lived in Canada ever. She lived in Southern California; she has her
whole life. Only if you people really know her
I started watching WKRP again on the Comedy Network here in Canada. I was only about 10
when the show was on originally and I found it pretty funny then. Now, about 20 years
later, as an adult, I think it's even funnier and I'm sure I'm catching a lot that I
missed as a kid. Always thought Bailey was better than Jennifer - glad to see others
agree.
By the way, for those Canadians who haven't found it yet, WKRP is on weekdays
at 7:30 PM on The Comedy Network on cable or satellite.

This site rules! I am going to put this as one of my favorite sites on my profile
on the net so people can give props to the Clothmonkey! Keep up the good work guys!
Hi Scott, Thanks for the website. I think it is terrific. Also, I think you are a very
gifted writer. And I agree: Jan Smithers is heartstoppingly beautiful. She leaves me
feeling kind of like a deer in the headlights. Or like when I see an amazing sunset. I
know I don't know anything about her personally, but it seems that some elements of her
personality must be reflected in her acting, beyond just the shyness. (?). At any rate, I
can't believe Brolin left her. Again, great website. Great writing.
Really enjoy your observations. John L.
Recently I wrote to the "Postmaster" at Nick and asked him to tell his
superiors how I felt about how WKRP is being treated, and how the show should be aired
daily and at a decent hour. Postmaster "Steve" replied to my letter and
explained that the show's ratings had been very low. I believe that if enough people write
and complain they might treat the show better. So if you want to keep seeing "Bailey
Quarters and the Gang" on a daily basis, PLEASE write to Nick at...

Jennifer Wilcox From Smithers. Great articles!
Thank you. Way back then I taped a number of KRP'S, and have watched them when the need
for good TV hit. And if ever there was a "what ever happened to ..." Jan
Smithers was it. I guess that most of us hoped that she was playing something that
approximated herself, it made her all the more beautiful that the person was beautiful,
too. I hope that life has been good to her. She gave us some bright spots, and, perhaps,
that is it's own reward. Thanks, again.
Why did Nick at Nite take WKRP off of their weeknight schedule? Please everyone email
them and tell them what a horrible injustice they're doing.
They've yet to show all
the KRP episodes, but are showing programs everynight like Mary Tyler Moore , that I know
they've ran through like 5 times! I wrote them and think you all should too....
The loveliest woman I've ever seen on TV. Tonight I watched an episode where Bailey, in
one scene, started to cry in disappointment over a frustrating production job. I thought
my heart would break! You're right, maybe Jan and Bailey aren't one and the same, but I
loved Bailey too. Love you Jan!

I t is unusual for me to wonder wnat happened to a celebrity , but Jan is a different
story I always loved her performances on WKRP and felt that she quietly stole the show and
after finding this site I believe I was right . I always saw her as a down to earth, cute
as a button person rather than as actress, thats why I suppose I always wondered what
happened to her when the show went off the air. Thanks for putting up this site and
letting us know that she is doing well, and I hope she is happy she deserves no less. Maybe
we'll see her on the screen again. Best wishes to all especially Jan thanks for a great

Nick at Night has done it, WKRP is not being aired daily any more. What a bummer! Happy
days is now in WKRP's time slot. I just reviewed their schedule and it looks like WKRP
will be aired only on Monday mornings at 1200am. What an outrage! Bailey fans can't see
her any more. I don't even think that N@N has completed airing all four seasons yet. I'm
going to write to N@N and complain. If we want to keep seeing Bailey Quarters Mon-Fri, I
suggest that all the Jan Smithers and Bailey Quaters fans out there do the same.

You are not the only one who likes Jan Smithers. Ever since they
have been running repeats on television, I thinks she looks a lot better than Loni
Anderson.
Thank You for this site. Life seems a little bit more liveable now that I know the
beautiful and talented Jan Smithers is still on this planet. The days don't seem as long
and the nights aren't as lonely. To Jan, thank you for all that you've given us. Please
know that you have not been forgotten, that we, your fans, are out there and will never
forget you. I wish you all the best. Say hi to Bailey for me, tell her we miss her and
still love her. Take Care! stargazer23@graffiti.net
Excellent site! Good to know that there are so many other Jan Smithers fans out there.
BTW,everybody knows that Nick also airs WKRP on Sun. evenings (or Mon. mornings depending
on your point of view...) at midnight in addition to the weeknight showings, right (At
least,at the moment they do. But if you think I'm gonna post every time Nick changes its
schedule {G}...). Anyway, keep the good work!
Fine page. M.Guzik
Jan Smithers was drop dead gorgeous! I always thought she blew Loni away. She had
beautiful hair, a nice figure, and great eyes. Why James left her for Barbara is anybody's
guess. Maybe she told him to use just for men or get out. I live less than 50 miles from
Canada and may swim across Lake Erie to view her beauty!
As a former Mental Health professional, I can tell
you the 'Jan vs Loni' question reveals more about a person's makeup than all the MMPI's
and Wais tests ever devised!!
When she is on the screen (even as a background
character) it is difficult to pay attention to anything else. Few actresses have that
level of presence.
She is clearly the secret (and sometimes not so secret) 'crush' of
our generation (and now, I see, the next as well).
Nevermind the 'fake plastic
bard-body inflatible pool toy' clones, where is the JAN poster?!!
On 13 Aug, "JS/BQ Fan..." wrote about the episode in which Johnny stood
Bailey up for Buffy. It reminded me how that scene changed the way I viewed Dr Fever. He
was always careless about himself but I saw the charater could carelessly hurt others as
well. Having been one of the "not in" kids when I was young, the stood-up scene
was very sad. The Earth Wind and Fire Number at the end was perfect... for years it has
been especially touching because of that episode. -Wayne

I've always thought that Bailey was the cutest employee of WKRP. She has that fantastic

Thanks for taking the time to keep the public abreast
of one of the most beautiful women on TV.
Great page! I too used to watch WKRP/C when it originally aired. Of course Loni was an
attention getter, face it, most large breasted women get oogled, like it or not. But JS
had a "smoldering" sexuality that just made me squirm on the couch. I was glad
my parents went to bed before the show came on; with all the cool music, Johnny looking
like Bill the Cat, and Venus Fly Trap demonstrating that Blacks dug rock music too. But
through it all, Jan was the Mary Ann of the radio world. Underestimated, but very potent.
Thanks for bringing back some tasty memories. Sincerely, Shane Tyler styler@gwdi.com
Hi, I have a question. Do you happen to know that if in Connecticut it is a LAW to have

Wasn't Jan on an episode of "Simmon & Simmon"? I am almost positive she
was. Patrick C.
I will add my e-mail by saying I live in Nova Scotia and have seen Jan and her kids a
few times. She seems quiet almost the way she is on WKRP, but she seems firendly although
I have never talked to her (what would I say*L*). I hear she is just one of the people in
town and people do not make a fuss over her. If i ever see her i will tell her about this
site (i'll bet she already knows).
Congratulations on a great Jan Smithers site. You said many things that I have been
saying for years. Jan is better looking, and her ex must be blind. Marge
Let's not forget Alec Baldwin who lives in Montreal. I'm from New York and wished I
could find a way to move to Canada too !
Jan Smithers is not the only celebrity to move to "The Great White North".
Tom Cruise is from and lives in Toronto (yes Tom is Canadian fans). Goldie
Hawn, Kurt
Russell, Carol Alt, Martin Short, Tom Selick, Kathie Lee Gifford (and her two sisters),
Doug Flutie, Warren Moon, Joe Theisman all have homes in Toronto and area, Rosie
O'Donnell, Gordon Lightfoot, just to name the ones I have seen in Canada.
I started watching WKRP on Nick at Nite a while back. Believe me, I think Jan Smithers
looks a lot better than Loni Anderson. Keep up the good work on this site!!! Dustin
Thanks for the Jan Smithers site!! I only wish I had found it before now. Yes, I too
melted somewhere inside when she was on-screen. And I watched every corner of every
episode to catch just one more glimpse! --Wayne Hall

Jan Smithers is still number One in my book. A real classy lady. Nick at Night should
do a Bailey Quarters Marathon. Run all the "Bailey" episodes on a specific

Thanks for the update on the "Americanization Of Ivan" episode editing issue.
I think J.M. did a great job of covering all of the points that we "Jan fans"
have discussed here in this forum regarding the re-editing of WKRP episodes. It's a shame
that N@N is forced to edit out much of the original music due to legal issues.
Unfortunately, that's the way things work in the real world sometimes.
Even with the
edits, it's still a pleasure to see WKRP on the air again, giving us "Jan fans"
our daily fix of Jan Smithers.

I like the page, and I've gotta agree with you about Jan being the more attractive of
the two in real life as well as on the show. I've never had the chance to meet Jan yet,
but I did work as an extra on a made-for-TV movie Loni Anderson was in called
"Country Gold". You know, out of a number of celebs in that film, the ONLY one
who was rude and stand-offish was Anderson. I was very disappointed in that. Everything
I've heard about Jan has been positive, and it shows in the fact that she still carries a
devoted following here after all these years, while Loni is still trying keep from being
forgotten by taking bit parts and REALLY lame movie roles. Can we say D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E?
Granted, neither one of them is twenty years younger, but I'd wager that Jan would still
carry her grace and beauty at whatever age far better than the caricature that Loni has
become. As they say, you can't buy class. Fortunantly, Jan was blessed with the gift of
it.

Nicole; nicole899@hotmail.com I always liked WKRP, but I was only able to see it in
reruns. I was only 6 in 1982, which I recently learned was the last year of the series. I
couldn't remember Jan's name or the character, I just knew there was a woman other than
Jennifer that I had liked. I can't really explain why I liked Baiely, but it had to have
been that she was smart and wasn't afraid to show it. She was nice and considerate and as
you have said, much prettier than Jenn. and somehow so gracefull. I always hoped Bailey
and Andy would end up together. I just saw the episode with the Russian defector. It was
so interesting that you liked it a lot too. I did notice some strange dubbing effects but
didn't know the cause. I actually taped that episode. It was really great that the
Russian(I forget his name) really SAW Bailey. This is a great page for a deserving star.

Jan Smithers is the ultimate BABE. I was always into the glasses thing too but even
more, I love the natural, thin body, long hair look. And Jan has the most beautiful, long,
straight, shiny hair out of them all. Other honorable mentions are Pam Dawber & The
woman who played Mrs.Kotter on Welcome Back Kotter. But Jan is the top. Her gorgeous face
& big beautiful eyes peeking from behind oversized glasses. It's like you can see into
her soul & tell how innocent & sweet she is. A turn on from top to bottom.
As
for the "Who would you do question.", there's no contest. Loni had & still
has nothing on Jan. Anyone who would say otherwise should have himself committed.
I
base every potential girlfriend on Jan. I know I'll never find her, but at least I have a
chance to see her on TV every night. Edited or unedited, as long as Bailey is on screen,
I'm happy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jan Smithers at O'Hare Airport one day, perhaps twenty
years ago. She was with another woman, and was carrying a CBS flight bag...she was wearing
a brown plaid skirt.. I approached her, introduced myself, told her I really enjoyed her
work....she was very polite and walked away down the terminal...she was walking into the
sun...and I nearly died. Why? No slip!!! Oh, dear, this woman's LEGS!!! I think Jan
Smithers is the best looking woman I have ever met in my life. Period. Sweet, too. James
Brolin was/is a schmeckle; he is serving his time in Hell, as I write this!

I agree with one of the previous posts in that, although it's really a shame that N@N
is editing out so much from the original WKRP episodes in the way of original music and a
few scenes, I still am very thankful that I can now see all the old WKRP episodes again
after so many years. I'm sure N@N wouldn't have devoted the resources to re-edit so many
of the episodes if they didn't have to. Just having Jan Smithers on the airwaves again, in
all her natural beauty and sweetness, is enough for me. Thanks N@N and thanks Scott for
the great web site. Most of all, thank you Jan Smithers. You are a truly a treasure!

Thanks for a great site on Jan. I have the same appreciation for sweet girls that are
tall, wear glasses (I still seem to like the large style so popular in the '80's) have
long hair, and are on the smart, independent, tomboyish side (lets wrastle!!!), and can
perfectly fill out a pair of tight jeans. My fav episode was the one where Dr. Fever was
shacking up w/Bailey for a couple days (I think he was hiding out or something). As I
remember, she was walkin' around alot in some excellent jeans. My other fav-babes through
the years are Meredith-Baxter-Birney, who also seems to have the ageless face &
figure, Daphne Zuninga in the "Sure Thing", and Helen Hunt in the early years of
the Mad About You Series, when she had shoulder-length hair and cute bangs (they made up
for the nose), and she wore those most excellent sports bras. But even after all those
years, I still remember Jan Smithers. She must have really made an impression. I believe
Jan had a short prime time series, shot on location in Chicago, named something like
"Officer Blue". I think it was done in the early 90's. If I can find some more
info on that I'll get it to ya. Also, I agree with a previous visitor about giving the axe
to the Streisand stuff. Paalllleeeeeze!!!

Great site! They say you can find anything on the net. Watching KRP on N@N, I made a
comment to friends that watching the show growing up, Bailey Quarters was THE dream girl
on TV! Imagine my suprise that there's a whole site! ANYWAY... I did not know the episodes
on N@N were edited and I can say I'm deeply disappointed. The show is a true piece of
70/80's nostalgia and really needs the 70/80's music. Scott's review of the "Tiny
Dancer" episode had me really looking forward to seeing it. And last night's show was
pretty lame. However, N@N had to have spent a lot of money to edit these shows (for
whatever reason) and if we complain too much, they may pull it. Where else will we see the
mighty KRP? I hadn't seen it since I was 12! Maybe thoughtful letters thanking them for
running the show would be more helpful. Maybe then they'll explain all the chops. Has
anyone got a reply yet? Or maybe...as Les would say...."They're Pinko
Communists"!

I can remember watching WKRP when I was younger, but not until about a month of go have
I really gotten in to watching it on N@N. But then I wasn't even born till 1980.
*L*
Anyway, I did a dumb thing and read the episode guide before I watched the shows. Of
course looking for good Bailey eps. (I"m female, and I see a lot of myself in her.
The character.) So even by reading the ep guides I can tell that a lot has been changed.
If anyone has any original eps on tape, I'd love to email with you about arranging to get
a copy somehow. Espeically last night's ep, The Americanization of Ivan.
And as to all
this Jennifer/Bailey controversy. Let's not forget that Jennifer and Bailey were friends.
In fact, in watching Bailey's Show and Bailey's Big Break, it's Jennifer who is putting
her up to becoming a better person, and for going for her dreams.
BTW ~~ Am I the only
one who thought that Bailey and Andy would make a really cute couple????

Nice web site! :) Taped "The Americanization of Ivan" last night, just
watched it again and sent an email off to N@N just to let them know the fantastic butcher
job they did to that episode. I wonder who came up with the "hold me closer tiny
dancer" voice over that was changed to "Hold My Order Terrible
Dresser"....oh brother. I kind of got used to regularly reading Fever's lips as they
dub over his lines too, when it comes to songs and artists. I wonder how they decide which
they can use, and which they have to dub...I'm getting good at it, though. Anyway, still
enjoying KRP after all these years, even N@N can't take that away...Lisa

Hey!
I am glad I found the site. I am 32 and Bailey Quarters was the
hottie. Not
Jennifer. The glasses, the hair, the figure..! Everything.
It's great to hear that she
is a down-to-earth person.
Also, Jan Smithers guest-starred in an episode of "The
Legmen", a NBC series in 1984.

I found your website, only website on Jan Smithers very enlightening. A little on the
"horny teenage boy" side by way of language though.I taped the WKRP reruns years
ago and I too am disappointed with Nick tv for editing the russian defector plot Elton
John song, but I still have the oringinal. Please keep looking for more pictures and info
on Jan from that era. A fan and some say a look alike Terry (Bailey) McKean

Hi, this is p.s. to my previous brief entry. I just want to say that I am a devotee of
Jan Smithers and believe as others do that Jan is by far the most natural fetching beauty
and outshines Jennifer. Also, just saw the Tiny Dancer episode sans music and dialog and
was so enraged that I'm emailing N@N to tell them that I intend to boycott thier station!
Please join me, as Arlo Guthrie said "if just three people walked in and protested,

um, hello... my name is Terry Campbell, and i proudly say i've always had a huge crush
on jan smithers, ever since i first saw "where the lillies bloom" . I can
honestly say i've never seen anyone more stunning than this lovely woman. I live in nova
scotia, about an hour and half drive from the halifax area, and am quite tempted the next
time im down there to keep my eye's peeled for her. i had no idea that she lived in nova
scotia, and to be honest, that thought makes me feel a little light headed. I'm not some
fanatic though whose going to go stalk her and track her down, but, i have to admit, the
idea of going around halifax, and "accidently" bumping into her and saying
"wait a sec, aren't you jan smithers?" and striking up an ever so brief
conversation with her is extremely tempting. Well, thank you ever so much for putting the
fan page up...you've answered the silent prayers of many. oh, and if jan is reading this,
um, i'd just like to say "thank you for just being talented and pretty"- sorry,
i know that's a little upfront, and normally im not so bold, but, you just seem to have
that effect on me. b'bye, thanks again for the page- its amazing.

I also fell in love with Bailey and watching WKRP again on N@N just reinforces that
feeling. I always thought there was much more depth to Bailey than she was allowed to show
in her part. I watch whenever I catch the showtimes on N@N. One of the best shows on TV.

While searching for the lyrics to the closing credits theme of WKRP,( with no luck so
far ) I stumbled upon this site. Wow. Wotta babe. I'm so glad that WKRP is back on the
air. I often watch it twice a day, and just can't get enough. Johnny Caravella was as big
an idiot as James Brolin. I'd also like to complaign about all the blasted re-editing that
has been done to the episodes. Not just the songs have been changed, often with
devastating effects, ( dammit, "Hot-Blooded" is supposed to play when Les tries
his toupee' ), but a lot of the dialogue has been changed as well. Some very funny lines
are simply GONE! Johnny's explanation about Jennifer's sex-change operation, for example,
is GONE! What the heck is going on here?! As for Jan, I'm sure she's just as hot today as
she ever was. Hers is a classic beauty of the sort that lasts a very long time indeed. I
have to admit that she is probably the main reason that women like her are my
"type."

Smithers. There's just something about her personna that makes everything fell alright.
Well I hope she has found happiness and that things go well for her. Jan if you're out
there please let your fans know how you're doing!! BTW!! Scott keep up the great work on

Well, most of the comments here are from men who have a crush on Jan
Smithers, but I'd
like to give one woman's point of view. I've always thought Jan was far more attractive
than Loni Anderson, and if I could choose to look like one of the two, it would be Jan for
sure! Meanwhile, my husband has never been able to understand why any guy would find Loni
more attractive than Jan. One of the few WKRP scenes I can't stand is when Mr. Carlson
(Gordon Jump) tells Jennifer (Loni Anderson), "Gosh, your hair looks beautiful today,
just like spun gold." He leaves, and then belatedly (and half-heartedly) pops his
head back in to tell Bailey (Jan Smithers), "Your hair looks nice today too,
Bailey." Hello? Now whose hair was naturally long, silky and beautiful, and whose
hair was a stiff pile of straw? Criminy, Loni's hair didn't even move when she shook her
head! Well, anyway, mark me down as a fan of Jan, and I wish her happiness.

Heard on Q-104 that Jan Smithers lives in Halifax,I grew up with WKRP and was a big fan

I sell plants at the Brewry Market in the spring so Jan probably buys from us and I don't

Hi Scott. I'm e-mailing you from NEW ZEALAND.
Neat site.
I work in radio as a
part time panel operator in a town on the North East coast of the North Island called
Whakatane in a region called the Bay Of Plenty. The stations I work for are 90.5 93 &
1242 1XX (One Double X) an Adult Contemporary (AC) music and community focused station and
an album orientated rock (AOR) station - Bayrock 97-7FM & 99-3FM. http://www.wave.co.nz/pages/azza/radbopltd.htm
WKRP was originally shown in New Zealand by TVNZ in 1979-1980 and the NEW WKRP was
also shown here also by TVNZ in the 90's. TVNZ has had re-runs of the original WKRP in the
90's since they first showed it.
Now in 1999 - 20 years on the original WKRP series is
presently being shown in New Zealand on PRIME TELEVISON - http://www.primetv.co.nz It's on Monday - Friday at
7pm NZ time. It has been on air since Monday July 5th. We've just had the Christmas
Episode (Aug 24th).
I help produce a radio show called "Remember When" on
1XX and on the show one of the segemnts is called The Sunday 6 Pack where we invite guest
to choose the 6 favourite songs out of the 50's, 60's and/or 70's and share their memories
about each song.
A lot of the guests have been passed 1XX crew of which some have gone
on to bigger things in the broadcasting industry in New Zealand. One former 1XX news
announcer who we had on the Sunday 6 Pack at the end of June this year (1999) who now does
sports reporting for TVNZ's ONE Network News said on his fax to me that when he was at 1XX
in 1979-1980, WKRP was just begining to be shown in NZ and at the time the station (1XX)
was a bit like WKRP - but without a Jennifer or a Bailey. (1XX is still a bit like WKRP
now too I think).
I've been watching WKRP since it's been on Prime Television and I'm
still loving it. And I agree with some of the comments on the guestbook - Jan has got a
lovely singing voice with the "Amazing Grace" solo.
One thing to note -
especially to those in the radio industry or who have been in radio, when they're doing
the "On Air" pieces (that is backselling or frontselling the records and Les AND
Bailey doing the news spots) has anyone noticed that NO ONE is wearing any headphones when
they open (turn on) their microphones to talk and that there are NO red ON AIR lights
anywhere in the studio or on the outside of the studio door? Your comments please.
And
a belated Happy 50th to Jan as well if you come across this site and read this Jan.
Yours sincerely, AARON ANDERSON

been watching WKRP on Nick, what a treat. Recently saw the "Baseball" episode.
Jan looks beautiful, alot prettier than Loni. In last night's episode Johnny stood Bailey
up for Buffy (What a character). John has to be crazy to forget Bailey (Beautiful and
Charming), in order to go out with Buffy (A Nut). Love the Earth Wind and Fire Number at
the end of the episode. Ever since 1979, everytime I hear that song I think of Jan
Smithers/ Bailey Quarters.

For me, not only was Jan Smithers an extremely attractive young lady, but her
consummate performance came when the group succeeded in pulling the wool over the
investigator's eyes about the level of intelligence of the staff members of
WKRP. Without
resorting to excessive caricature, Miss Smithers presented a portrait that is beyond
criticism. As is stated elsewhere on your page, she exemplified the insecure young lady
who only believes she is a capable office worker but of no interest to anyone else. It
might have been interesting to see what the writers would have done had Miss Smithers's
character been allowed to acquire a boy friend. Probably there would have been several
million extremely jealous male viewers all across the country busy notifying the writers
that any further shattering of their dreams would not be tolerated. And I would have
definitely complained in bold italics!!

I was NOT a teen-ager when the WKRP show first aired and so was able to "see
beyond" the flashy/trashy loni and recognize real beauty. The best one in my opinion
was a two-parter where Travis and loni were shot in bathing suits for a commercial. The
photog took nude pics of loni in the dressing room and Bailey cooked up a scheme with Dr.
Fever to pose as west coast magazine reps. and buy the negs. Bailey was a knockout in a
purple business suit and proved her ability as an actress. wayne.nobbs@chancecoach.com

You mentioned the editdowns of WKRP episodes and it becomes quite obvious as I see
other pages with quotes from the show and wonder where they came from. Nick at Nite is my
first mass exposure to the show (I saw the $5000 contest episode on E! and was annoyed
that they cut the last scene with Johnny announcing a tube of lip balm as a contest prize)
and now I'm wanting to know what I'm missing. I'm guessing they'll edit down "The

Thank heavens someone put this page up! Having had no luck with web searches before, I
thought I was the only one with a long-term secret crush on Jan.
I first caught KRP when it first went into re-runs in the early 80s. I think my wife
got pretty tired of hearing my "Was everyone blind? Am I the only one who can
recognize a beautiful woman?" comments every time the show tried to present Loni as
the beauty and Jan as the wallflower. Guess what -- now, with the Nick revival, she'll get
to hear them all over again...
Anyway, thanks for the site. And, Jan, if you ever drop by, I hope you're having a good
life up there in Halifax.

I watched every episode of the WKRP marathon on Nick at Nite, and, at this very minute,
I'm watching the early episode with Hoyt Axton. I'm glad Nick is bringing back the WKRP
episodes. It was one of my favorite shows growing up. And, yes, as a horny little
teenager, I was more interested in Loni when the show began. Well, with those tight,
low-cut dresses, who could blame any teenager for thinking that way. It was obvious from
the start that Loni was going to be the sex symbol of the show. But, it did not take long
for me to become totally in love with Jan. While Loni was busy being the modern-day
Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield, Jan was easily the more naturally beautiful of the two.
While Loni's looks are obviously aided by cosmetics (and, now, modern medical science),
Jan has the kind beauty that never needs a touch-up. By the way, if you saw the Nick
marathon, then you must have noticed how stretched and pulled Loni's face looked. How many
plastic surgeries does it take to get your eyes on the sides of your head?? Loni's appeal
on TV was the platinum blonde hair and the body. But, anyone who's ever seen the episode
where Johnny stays at Bailey's place, knows full well that Jan stacks up pretty well in
the physical attributes department. My God, those jeans and that black T-shirt!! And, when
those glasses come off ...... Well, I better quit now before my glasses fog up and my
computer screen gets sticky. :-)

Saw Jan sing "Amazing Grace" on last night's WKRP episode. What a treat! Jan
Smithers is such a beautiful and talented woman, with a great singing voice. Jan should
have had a leading role in her own TV series. Why Jan has not been on more television
shows and movies is a mystery to me. Maybe the guys in the entertainment industry can't
recognize talent, when its staring right at them. Loni can't sing and I can't understand
why the big fuss over her on the show, Jan is ALOT more beautiful the Loni.

Speaking of Nick-At-Nite editing some of the WKRP episodes, is it just me or has
anybody else noticed that they seem to be substituting some of the original
"then-current" 70's rock music with other "generic" rock music? I
recently saw the episode where someone anonymously leaves Johnny Fever a baby on the
station's doorstep. I seem to remember that during the last scene of that particular
episode, where Johnny is talking into the microphone, assuring the unknown mother that her
baby has found a new home with a loving couple, that the music that was played during the
fade-out was different than the original episode.
In the original episode, I distinctly remember the song that Johnny Fever plays at the
very end being James Taylor's hit song "Your Smiling Face." On the recent
Nick-At-Nite airing of this episode, the song at the end was a different, nondescript song
that I had never heard before. In fact, during that scene, Johnny has a copy of the James
Taylor album "JT" in his hand just before speaking into the microphone. That
James Taylor album just so happens to be the album that the song "Your Smiling
Face" is from.
I know this sounds a little far fetched, but has anybody else noticed that you don't
hear as many 70's-era hit songs being played on Nick-At-Nite's episodes of
WKRP? I wonder
if they have some sort of licensing problem preventing them from playing the original
music.
Just as long as they leave Jan's scenes alone, I don't mind too much. Let's see if they
substitute Elton John's "Hold Me Close Tiny Dancer" or Earth, Wind and Fire's
"After The Love Is Gone" with other generic music when those particular episodes
air.

Surprised again at how many people were drawn to Bailey. It's great to feel like a
twentysomething again! Just one request to those that read this. If you were a great fan
of WKRP, as I was, you have noticed that N@N is cutting a lot of the shows shorter (i.e.,
during the show when Les goes on the ledge, they cut the scene out entirely when Johnny
tells Herb that Jennifer is the result of a sex-change operation! It ruins a lot of the
jokes, like when Herb asks Jennifer if she'd like to go bowling). I have written them
about this, to cut out commercials instead of cutting up one of the best TV sitcoms ever
on TV. Start a write-in campaign! It can't hurt, and maybe they'll know that a lot of us
are watching then.

Hi, I just browsed on in looking for info on Gary Sandy (and not finding much..last I
knew he doing a variety of theater work). I wound up reading everything on your site -
really cool! You do a great job, and have a great attitude, too. I hope someone tells Jan
about your site so she can tell you herself someday. Keep up the good work! --Shelley R.

It is, indeed, refreshing to see Internet resources put to such good use! I was
"Smithers Smitten" after the magazine cover in'66! I'm sure time has only added
to her beauty and grace! Keep up the good work. Ms. Smithers is a treasure and your site
has done well in respectfully preserving the record! Keep up the good work! Oh, by the
way, if you should be lucky enough to talk with "Our Lady", thank her for
setting a standard of style and quiet elegance seldom seen in the entertainment industry.

I just found this "Jan" page and think it is neet. I have had the chance to
meet Jan Smithers twice during the 1980's once at the Wayne Gretzky Tennis Fund Raiser in
Brantfort,Ontario and once at a food market in Nova Scotia (where if not mistaken I think
she actually lives). She was buying Orange Juice and had a buggy full of food. I said hi
to her and she smiled and said hi back to me in a real down to earth way. I just want to
say that if you think she is a babe on TV you should see her in person TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL !
I always thought Barbara Eden was the best looking woman in the history of TV but Jan came
along and took over the #1 spot. There will never be another like her to grace our
livingrooms. Jan, Thank You for taking the time to make my day that one morning in an food
mart in Nova Scotia.

Hi. Cool job on the site. WKRP is one of my all-time favorites and I'm glad to see it
again on Nick at Nite.
My favorite memory of Bailey is the scene in the episode where Herb lands the funeral
parlor account. Herb is auditioning singers for the jingle. He auditions Bailey, who sings
"Amazing Grace". WOW! What a beautiful voice to go with that gorgeous face of
hers. I think that is what got me attracted to her. :-)
Again, good job.

Hey, the girls out there admired Bailey too!! She was classy, and embodied the
qualities of a strong and independent woman. Who could forget Bailey playing the
sophisticated "Ginger", a perfect match to Johnny's zanny "Phillip"
(in that episode where they dealt with that sleazy photographer). All in all, great site.

Certainly the reason why I arrived at your web site was an inordinate admiration, lust
and adolescent searing obsession with ANYTHING Bailey (or Jan ... whatever). What will
keep me returning is the quality writing about a multitude of subjects both weighty and
significant as well as amusing and arcane. I can't say I embrace the philosophy behind all
the exposition (necessarily) but it is done so well! I am compelled to revel in it for the
sheer joy and appreciation of the wielding of the language with such consumate skill. It
is apparent that the writer not only is more than merely capable but also enjoys the
process itself. Bravo! As a federal employee myself I was not really disappointed that my
organization was left out of the scathing indictment meted out to other no doubt more
worthy Federal institutions.
Thanks for the unusually literate rendition of HTML production. I can now admit that I
not only VOTED for Perot but stood in front of Walmart stores, gathering petition
signatures for this character. Voted NLP in '96.

What a great page! Jan Smithers is the most naturally beautiful woman I've ever laid
eyes on. Thanks to your page, I find I'm not the only guy who had a mad crush on Bailey
after all. Sorry, Loni, but you didn't even begin to compare to Jan. WKRP was and still is
my all time favorite sitcom. The N@N marathon was fantastic; I managed to tape all 40
episodes, and am now taping the other 52 as they air. If Jan ever reads this, I wish her
happoness in her life, but I selfishly hope she comes back to acting some day.

Ditto to everything, but let us be THANKFUL Loni Anderson got the attention and Jan
Smithers did not. Jan obviously didn't want the attention, and Loni has become a cartoon
version of herself, like Farrah Fawcett has. I visited a website devoted to Playboy
magazine, in which Playmates from ten and twenty and thirty years ago still go to
conventions, signing autographs, as if posing topless when they were teenagers was an
achievement. How graceful and fine it is that Jan Smithers does NOT run a website devoted
to herself. Praise is most genuine when you don't ask for it.

excellent Capt. Janeway.

In addition, jeans looked so good on her that I had hen embedded in my brain ever since.

Thanks for a wonderful site dedicated to Jan. It took me several days to find a site
like this, and it was well worth the search! I love WKRP, it started the year I was born
1978, and means a lot to me. I watch it every ninght; and Jan is the main reason. She is
near perfection, I had a crush on her when I was young and it was in syndication. Nothing
is more wonderful than a woman that looks like Jan Smithers (especially the glasses!)

Thanks for dedicating a nice site to a special lady. Like a number of your visitors,
the recent Nick at Nite WKRP marathon jogged some memories for me. I've been mesmerized by
Jan since high school. I distinctly remember a day in the spring of 1966 when the
celebrated Newsweek issue (restless youth types that we were) appeared in the school
library's periodical rack. I must have looked feverish or something as I stared at Jan on
that cover because I recall someone asking me if I felt all right. The magic has stayed
with me ever since. Watching her as Bailey in WKRP in 1978 made me as goofy as I had been
twelve years earlier. Seeing her again in the 'KRP re-runs this month had the same amazing
effect. How does she do it? I don't really know (but it would be fascinating to hear Jan
explain it!) What I do know is that some things are timeless and Jan's ability to inflict
a debilitating case of wobbly knees and slurred speech on me today, just as easily as she
did when we were teenagers, appears to be one of them. Being smitten with Smithers is like
a stay at the Hotel California: You can check out any time you like, but you can never
leave. <wajar@worldnet.att.net>

Wow.... I got home from a two week vacation to find that Nick is running
WKRP, without
a doubt my favourite sitcom of all time. The episode I caught last night was "Garbage
Rock" (remember, the one with "Scum of the Earth" :-)). At any rate... as I
flipped by and caught the episode, the first scene I saw was Bailey (Jan) in the old
entryway of the station with (of course) Lonny... Without trying to sound like a total
drooling fanboy psychopath, that one image.. Jan in jeans, a men's buttondown shirt with a
few buttons open, and suspenders, threw me IMMEDIATELY back to my college days of watching
that show every day and daydreaming of Bailey. Yup... I'm a Jan-o-phile and, as the lot of
you say, I've never trusted anyone who's answered the Lonny vs. Jan question any other way
than a resounding "Jan"!
Just out of curiousity I did a web search and voila, here I am. Thanks SO much for this
site... *sigh* It's a great site and makes me realise all over again how wonderful
supposed "plain" girls are...

Hi!
I came across your site quite by accident, I was trying to find the words to the
closing theme of WKRP...I've always thought Jan was more attractive than Loni Anderson, so
I was glad to see this site. Anyway, I saw something that needs to be corrected and/or
amended: the station in SF that was mentioned may have been ONE of the radio stations that
WKRP was based on, but the bulk of it was WQXI 790 here in Atlanta...there was even a
turkey stunt, though they weren't dropped from helicopters. Just thought I'd point that
out. Great page, I hope Jan knows she still has some fans, and I hope she logs in and sees
that! ciao!

WKRP has just started playing here in New Zealand, believe it or not - I don't know if

Since my previous comments were relegated to an "archive" guest book, let me
re-comment. It is now twice in my life that "WKRP" has saved my life. Once in
college, watching reruns of the show got me through a nasty case of stomach flu. The
beautiful face of Bailey and the tight jeans and feathered hair of Andy pulled my through
with flying colors. More recently, the Nick at Nite marathon helped to dull the horror
that was my family's vacation! I've been passing the word along about your site to all of
my friends. Someone should give the honchos at Nick a big smooch for putting one of the
best shows back on TV! p.s. -- not to take the focus away from Jan, but Gary Sandy

Anyone anal retentive enough to save back issues of TV Guide going back to 79 or 80
might dig up an article on Jan that I clearly remember having read while KRP was a hit
sitcom. I recall they detailed Jan's struggle to make it in TV, esp. the heat she took for
the scar on her chin and the cosmetic surgery she underwent as a result. I fancied myself
a future TV celeb at that time and thought, "If this gorgeous woman's bit of scar
tissue [which I still don't think I've distinctly seen] has made it difficult for her, how
can a goofy looking punk like me even have a chance?" Take heart readers: I blossomed
into an attractive adult, and never made into a TV sitcom, which I no longer consider
cruel fate.

I love this page. I think it is about time someone had enough sense to design a website
about a REAL WOMAN. I was around three years old when WKRP started airing and I remember
Bailey was the first girl I had a crush on. I must admit I still have a crush on the ideal
of Bailey and I'm still looking for someone like her. A true lady, who is shy, but can
speak her mind when necessary. A beauty, who just doesn't realize how beautiful she really
is. And certainly an intelligent woman who knows more than just the latest fad out of
Cosmo. Bailey fit all those qualifications. I guess only the "pefect woman"
would. I would love to meet such a woman in real life and I would love to meet Jan and see
how close she is to the character she portrayed. Keep up the good work. Joe

Bailey Quarters (Jan Smithers). She's gorgeous, smart, and has an endearing personality. I
hope that Ms. Smithers will post some comments on y'alls web page as many of us would like
