When the "celebrities" you read and hear about are all so warped in some way, it's really great to find that someone who gave such great feelings to a lot of fans 20 years ago is still the same. I think the most telling remark on this site is when J.S. auditioned for the part and won it because "all the others 'acted' shy - she WAS shy." This type of humility was the attraction for me. I'm just another proud worshiper of Jan.

Your letter to nick at nite about the edit of wkrp was right on. The letter you got back from nick at nite was a complete LIE!!!!!!!!!!!Other tv stations around the country have no problem showing the show without editing out songs!!NIKE AT NITE LIES!!!!!!Also a very intresting side note,nike at nite was started by the very same people that started mtv, you know MUSIC television!!(well when it WAS music television,not like now, I call it urban television)I'm sure they know who has the rights to certain songs they are just CHEAP!!!!!!Thank You.

When W.K.R.P was on I always thought that Jan was the embodiment of beauty. That she was the "pretty" one on the show; not to say that Loni wasn't; but Jan just had that certain something. Regarding your nonsense about the Millennium starting in 2000: just because a bunch of people have a wrong idea doesn't make it right; when everybody thought the world was flat, that didn't make it flat for real. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know how to COUNT, & if you DO know how to count, then the Millennium clearly starts at 2001.

Hi!!!

I was just doing some surfing when I came upon this site.

WKRP was without a doubt, one of the best shows ever to hit the airways and I think everybody I ever knew was in love with Jan/Bailey!!!

There was a few episodes when Bailey was sporting tight jeans; the show when everybody thought that Johnny and Bailey were sleeping together comes to mind, and boy did she look HOT!!!!

I get to watch WKRP almost everyday up here in Canada because it's on our Comedy Network!!! The show is almost timeless and it's just as funny now as it was back then!!!!

You have to get a picture up of her when she was dressed in jeans and Johnny's infamous "Black Death" t-shirt!!!! A definite hi-light in the the history of Television!!!!

Very Interesting. If the monks had it wrong and you are culture, then I'm worried. You really didn't give me a viable alternative to starting at year 1. 2000 is still 2 millenia and 2001 starts the count for the third millenium. My friend taped four days' worth of N@N's "WKRP" marathon and I've been watching three or four episodes a day for a few weeks now. My habit rules my life and I've never been more fulfilled. Did you ever notice in N@N's version of "Sparky," the episode featuring Sparky Anderson, that when he says the call letters on the air, he's overdubbed? I always wondered if he accidentally blew the letters or something. I try to read his lips to no avail. For the record, I really enjoyed your Web site on Jan Smithers. I started out looking for stuff on Gary Sandy and found an update here, so thanks for that, too. I too preferred Smithers over Anderson. Nothing against Loni, but sometimes her makeup was downright horrifying. One more thing: One of Jan's finest comedic moments had to be in the episode in which Venus is courted by another radio station. Nice to see a page dedicated to one of the most beautiful women ever to appear on tv . I agree with you , when you say Jan should have garnered far more attention than Loni Anderson did from that show . Her beauty was far more natural , and subtler . That woman could wear a pair of jeans like no other !!! My favorite episode was the one where Johnny had to stay at Baileys place , and everybody at the station thought they had a thing going . Bailey got mad , and the final scene with her coming to work with her hair all teased , and no glasses was so hot ! Jan is a true , natural beauty . I live in Nova Scotia , and I remember when the front page of our newspaper had the picture of Jan and James Brolin leaving the church in Baddeck , N.S. , on their wedding day . I can't believe that idiot divorced Jan to marry Barbara ( big-nosed, cross-eyed ) Streisand . Jan , we love you here in Halifax ! Y'know, things just kinda work that way......

I got to your contents page via a link on the Govt. "code" pages, looking to download a tax form for my boss. I saw your license code page and just had to look. After realizing it was for Washington,D.C. and New York, and being in NH myself, I went on to peruse the pages of your wicked website just for fun. I was thrilled, it was beautiful! I printed out your Quotes, for me, (loved the one on Blatherboro) and the pages on Heroes for my husband, who is facinated by anything "space" (even tells me the speed of light and the distance between certain planets while I'm lookin' at the stars...and speaking of stars, he LOVES Bailey!) I then printed the pages on Tom Swift for my 9-year-old son, who is avidly interested in anything inventive and adventurous on paper (he even writes HIS own). Then I sent the link to a friend in California who shares the same sense of humor, and a love of good web, and went home with my find to read away the evening. My reading was interupted by the program on PBS, a three-part-series, on the origin of computer technology and what it is today.....featuring all of the faces on your "Cover Photo".

The unusual part of all of this is that when I called to tell my California friend to check out what I was watching, he said "Yeah! I showed a friend the photo you sent me, and he named off about six of the guys in that photo, and DO YOU KNOW WHO THEY WERE?" I said, "What photo?". I had never even SEEN the cover page to Cloth Monkey. I just sent the link. As I was watching Steve Wosniak and Paul Allen and Steve Jobs and Bill Gates on TV, he was talking to a friend about this baby photo of the guys. Weird? I guess. Finding this web site was through a bit of serendipity. I was playing a WKRP trivia game on the net and discovered Bailey's (Jan's) web site purely by accident. I don't know who prepared the summary on Jan as "Bailey but I could'nt agee more. I was a freshman in college in the fall of 1978 when WKRP first aired and was immediately attracted to Jan. She does typify what most men find attractive. I know this to be so because the most the guys I know where definitely Bailey over Jennifer types. I never did find a "bailey" but it was fun trying. The calendar we use today is the accepted calendar. Just deal with it! Although those monks did make a mistake, so did you. The new millennium should have been 1997, for that would be two thousand after Christ's earthly birth.

I am afraid you are wrong. By the current calendar (the one that you use every day), the next millennium starts Jan 1 2001 and it is irrelevant whether the monks were wrong or that 31.12.99 seems a good date to party. The rules of the system in use are quite clear, no Year 0 was used and it is immpossible that 2000 is the start of the third calendar millennium. Of course, you may just be bad at maths..!!!

Boy, Bailey Quarters! She was always my favourite too. I was about 15/16 when WKRP was aired in South Africa, and thouht that she was a stunner, much more attractive than the artificial Loni. My puberty and mid teens would not have been the same without the wonderful, gorgeous Bailey Quarters.... I now live in England, and nobody here has heard of WKRP in Cincinnatti, so not much chance of me seeing any repeats. Sigh.

Love your Jan Smithers site. Just thought I'd say a few words about Bailey's role on "WKRP," since I've been watching the show a lot lately (on the Comedy Network, here in Canada-- some of the music's different, but the episodes are--mostly--uncut, yay). The perception is that she had a very small role on the show, but I find that this is only true in the first season, when she has only one "solo" episode (the wonderful "Bailey's Show") and little else except the occasional line or walk-on. (But then, Venus and even Jennifer also seem a little under-written in the first season; remember the episode "Hold-Up"--the one at Del's Stereo and Sound--where Bailey, Jennifer and Venus don't appear at all?) But starting with the second season, Bailey has an increased role in the show, getting some starring roles like "The Americanization of Ivan" and "Bailey's Big Break" (though that's more a Bailey and Les episode than a Bailey solo vehicle), and acting as a catalyst for the plot in other episodes like "Put Up Or Shut Up" (convincing Jennifer to call Herb's bluff), "For Love Or Money," and "Carlson For President." The third season adds her interest in environmental activism, and the final season has arguably the two most memorable Bailey episodes: innocently sexy in "Rumors" (Johnny briefly moves in with Bailey), vulnerable and fallible in "Dear Liar" (Bailey "fictionalizes" a news report). It's true that there are quite a few episodes where Bailey doesn't have much to do, but on a show with so many regulars, everybody has episodes like that-- so, for example, while Bailey doesn't have much to do in "An Explosive Affair," neither does Herb, and neither does Les. I suspect that the "syndicated" versions make Bailey's part seem smaller than it is by chopping out her scenes (most notoriously, of course, in "Daydreams," where Bailey's dream is edited out in syndication). But let's not weep too much for the smallness of Bailey's part, because all in all, she holds her own with the others, and stars in some pretty memorable episodes. (I forgot to add "I Am Woman"--third season--to the list. Love that one, especially her drunk scene.)

An additional point about Smithers: Though she wore a lot of makeup in order to obscure the scar on her chin, she nonetheless conveys a feeling of naturalness in her looks and manner that makes her feel unusually "real" for a Hollywood on-screen personality. The contrast with Loni Anderson, who is purposely artificial in looks and manner, is clear and intentional. I think both of the ladies on 'KRP are rather underrated as actresses...

Don't tell me that you are another one of these followers that think that we are already in the 21st century! It's really simple: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Ten years = decade... New decade starts at 11, 12.....up to 20. Since there is no year 0 A.D. you cannot say that 2000 is the beginning of the third millenium until 2000 years have been COMPLETED. Therefore, as a person who has clear thoughts, 2001 is the first year of the third millenium!

i'm so glad to see a Jan Smithers page. For years I believed i was the only person in the world who had a crush on Bailey (now, i admit, she wasn't my first love growing up, that was reserved for Wilma Dearing from Buck Rogers, but she was a CLOSE second).

it's almost scary the rush of memories that came back due to your page. i still remember the Red Wigglers jingle, and, thanks to your page, i think that song will be stuck in my head for ages now. Bailey rocks, guys.....keep the faith!

Was reading an article on Barbra Streisand re stalker incident that recently happened and saw Jan Smither's name. Just lucked out an found your website because other sites I had put her name in did not have anything worth looking at, not even her picture!!! Thanks for an enjoyable trip back to WKRP. Loved that series. Don't have cable or satellite where I now live, so can't catch anything that's not on my two, yes two channels I do have. From the moment I saw my first episode of WKRP way back when, Bailey Quarters has been my ideal woman, so much so that I've spent the last twenty years looking for a woman as much like her as possible in charm, temperament and appearance. The fact that I'm still single (despite three offers of marriage from otherwise nice women) means either that I'm firmly committed to this ideal or out of my pathetic little mind.

Either way, I congratulate you on your loving and respectful salute to Jan Smithers, the talented actress who brought Bailey to vivid life. Keep up the good work and I hope you eventually succeed in getting some (no doubt positive) acknowledgment from Miss Smithers.

Jan Smithers was my all time favourite TV actress. The only other actress who holds a candle to her (and not by much, by the way) is Meg Ryan. Jan was one of *the* reasons I loved to watch WKRP. I live in Canada myself, so it was a treat to hear that she lives here too - although she is many hundreds of miles away from me. <sigh> I heard that some producer saw her in a bikini on the beach and immediately decided she should go for the part of Bailey Quarters. Don't know if it's true or not but I wouldn't doubt it a bit. Remember that classic line from Dr. Fever, when he was getting over stage fright, and Bailey's told him to just pretend to talk just to her, rather than all of Cincinatti? I was 16 years old in 1967 and remember the names of many of the places mentioned in the book. Too young to swing, but what a great period to be a San Franciscan. Enjoyed the yellowed, dog earred, coffee stained pages of the book. Any possibility to get a reprint? Thanks for the memories.

Great page here. I have been a longtime lusty fan of Jan for quite a long time. I loved WKRP when it was on, and actually have all the episodes on tape (he he). Jan was definetly a big favorite of mine. She never became prominant in the show until later episodes, where she definetly blossomed into a incredible beautiful and definetly well put together woman, and as a hot blooded male, I definetly noticed. I liked Lonny Anderson alot also, a great and funny actress in the show, but the shows I loved the best were the ones (I remember the T-shirt one) with Jan formost in them. I happened to catch your page here when I found an old tape of WKRP shows i had taped on it, the one where Jonny's first wife gets remarried and He is so happy he tries to get Bailey to go to Jamaca on vacation with him....I was looking at Jan leaning against the wall in tight pants and blouse, WITH the glasses of course.. WOW..very yummy. So, I jumped on the web and searched out Jan sites..and there you were! the one and only! Again, good job. Its great to be able to get on the internet now and find such great sites. To be able to see Jan and see others who think the same as I do, is very nice. The only problem was that Jan decided to get out of show buisness just when she was becomming an incredibly stunning woman. But thats her decision I guess. Quite a loss. I do like it that in the last few episodes It was very noticeable that Jan was quickly becomming the major hottie on the show, overtaking Lonny.

I thought I was the only one who appreciated Jan Smithers. Not only is she beautiful, but, to her credit (and one of the things I appreciate most) she hasn't sold her soul to Hollywood. Seems most actors/actresses would do anything required of a part. Ms. Smithers (to the best of my knowledge) always seemed to keep it clean. I would think that is indicative of the person. Brolin must be bonkers, he'll realize that one day. Wasn't she on an epsisode of Magnum P.I.? Love ya Jan!

WKRP airs here in Swift Current,Sask. on the comedy channel via Shaw cable every weeknight at 6:30 PM and still makes for an entertaining show, actually a lot better and less stressful than most of the sitcoms we see from today. Like your site and agree Jan was always in Loni's shadow when she actually would have shone had Loni not been there. Keep up the good work!

What can I say? I've been asking the Bailey or Jennifer question for many years. Those under 30 just don't get it. Thank you for this site. Jan Smithers is truly one of the worlds most beautiful women, and the fact that she keeps a low profile simply proves her beauty of heart as well. I'm 43 years old now, as a young man I LUSTED after the shy and beautiful Bailey. During long road trips to my grandparents "down south", my family and I would pass by the radio/tv towers in Cincy that were shown in the intro to "WKRP". Just this past Christmas, I looked at them and could only say "as God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!"

As far as Jan and her character are concerned, I've come to appreciate their presence in the cast. I'm a recent Jan Smithers convert, and I see a bit of Bailey in myself; her quiet demeanor, etc.

I wish Jan all the best, and hope that she's doing well. Once again, thanks for putting together a great web site. I'll be back to visit.

This is a most enjoyable site - with a few exceptions. For folks that claim to love and admire Jan Smithers, I have seen MANY disrespectful comments in the site text and the guest signatures. Comments that cannot be reconciled with true appreciation for another human being.

Furthermore, unless the photo of her daughter and the location of her neighborhood were public information already, it was most inconsiderate to post them here. I'm sure she has not disclosed the details posted here, regarding her residence; this information obviously comes from locals. My hometown serves as residence to many people of extreme celebrity, yet I would never discuss where they live or to which team their child belongs - especially on the internet. You people have no idea who is reading that information or what they may do with it...what are you all thinking?

I think some of you are hoping she will participate or respond. She is obviously a private person. How many of you even knew who she was married to before the third (and incredibly public) party became involved? Respect that privacy and appreciate her work, do not fixate on the person.

Finally - of the regular cast of characters (Mother Carlson not included), the closest thing they had to a villain was Herb, and he was harmless. So, why has Jennifer's character insulted? She was a bit snobbish on the surface, but the 'core' character was sensitive, caring, intelligent, and strong. If the bonds between the characters are not forgotten, they will all be remembered fondly. (And, she was referred to as "Loni" during at least one of the Bailey VS Jennifer comparisons, which makes less sense than not liking the character.)

I hope everyone will think about these things, rather than just getting offended and moving on.

Jan Smithers has always been HOT! She just turned 50! She is the sexiest 50 year old I have ever seen! Some lucky Candian just made her his wife. I just saw her on a "Murder She Wrote" rerun recently. She still looks hot in jeans! Why the hell James Brolin wanted to leave her for Barbara Streisand? I think he needs glasses! I always felt a little like Arthur Carlson, even though I looked like Dr. Johnny Fever. Like Fever, I wanted to iss Bailey all over in the dark! But with the lights on! I wish Jan all the happiness in the world! I would like to see WKRP In Cincinnati return to television for more that a three week run! Everytime I plan to tape it, it disappears! I finally got 20 episodes on tape! Also, I finally got the complete episode guide! It's free! Just use a Dot Matrix printer! It's cheaper to use. Jan Smithers is the sexiest woman I've ever seen! If a certain lady named Lori had ever looked like Jan, she would have caught me! But she didn't look like Jan. I'm still looking for my Bailey! I hope someone will add another page to Jan, she deserves it! Why can't TV Land & Nick At Nite leave my shows to hell alone! No wonder I don't watch them anymore. Nick at Nite has a couple of pictures of Jan and a few sound bites. Including "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly" A Superior, Wisconsin radio station had planned to repeat that stunt during Thanksgiving! You should have heard of the complaints! The station pointed out that they were not as stupid as Arthur Carlson! They threw out Marshmallow Turkeys with Free Turkey Coupons attached. The Marshmallow Turkeys couldn't fly either! But, at least they didn't break any windshields either! "Oh!, the humanity!" I would like to hear from Jan or the rest of the cast. Loni Anderson is from Minnesota! So is Louie! Jan, I love you! and I'm having your baby! I will always remember her as Bailey! I would like to know where she's from. Maybe you can add a Biography page? I hope to see Jan on TV soon. But I heard she is retired. Hope to hear more soon.

(I'm parapharsing) Makes ya wonder what in the world Hollywood did to the poor shy kid anyway, doesn't it? To give a little credit where due, apparently her not participating wasn't because the production people didn't want her along but because, like the rest of us, they couldn't find her. Great site, I was just watching an episode of wkrp and wondered what the beautiful Jan was up to. I initiated a search and this page came up. WKRP airs in Canada on the Comedy Network twice a day, and yes the episodes are the same edited versions that ran on Nick at Nite. You mention the episode with the song "tiny dancer" being appalling. I think I've seen a worse abomination, the episode where Les asks Jennifer on a date is similarly cannibalized. In the scene where Les puts on a wig to the tune "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner, the song is changed to some generic crap, It totally ruins the scene. I could not watch it.

In "a Date With Jennifer," the song "Hot Blooded" is replaced, but not by "generic crap"; it's a real song. Other episodes have had "generic" (non-vocal) music) dubbed in. But except for the "Tiny Dancer" episode where the dialogue is ruined (who the hell came up with the idea to dub in that terrible line when these episodes were redubbed back in 1991 or so?), I don't really understand the fuss. It's called copyright, folks. Back in the '80s when the original syndication package was being prepared, the rights to those songs were cheaper than they are now. By the '90s, the costs had risen enough that the "New WKRP" couldn't afford to use real songs (they used sound-alike fake songs instead). The problem was increased by the fact that the people who owned MTM Enterprises didn't have a lot of money to throw around once the company started going under, so when they were preparing the episodes for re-release in the early '90s, they had to cut corners and dub in some "cheap" music. But for gosh sakes, this is a sitcom, not a music video, and yes, the original music was chosen to add something to the scenes, but the scenes work just fine with different music and it's the comedy that counts, etcetera. I too wish that all the original music could have been left in, but I genuinely don't understand people who allow the changes to spoil their enjoyment of the show. (And please, folks, stop blaming Nick at Nite and/or the Comedy Network for these changes. The changes were made in the early '90s. The reason E! showed WKRP with more of the original music is that their tapes were of the '80s syndication version prepared by Victory TV. But that syndication package is no longer being sold.) One more thing: the Comedy Network in Canada shows most episodes without syndication cuts, in their original 24-minute lengths. To me, having 2 minutes of original material restored to the episodes is much more important than whether Johnny's playing The Doors or not.

Just caught the special Enertainment Tonight episode about WKRP in Cincinatti. As to be expected, the majority of the show was about Loni Anderson, but they did do a segment about Jan, and made mention about refuting an internet story about her divorce with James Brolin. (Perhaps referring to this site?)She reports that her and James are still friends, That Babs and Brolie didn't hook up until 5 years after their divorce, and that Molly still visits with her father every other weekend. Jan still looks beautiful, considering the years.

And yes I did tape it.
