Johnny Sachu, Brigham City,Utah. I've been enjoying your web pages and especially the Jan Smithers articles/write-ups. I like the pictures too, but I was quite disapointed that her nudes weren't shown. I guessing copywrite/& fees or things like that are holding them up. (?) Anyway, I'd sure like them added, if possible. Keep on chugglin'. Thanks.

Love your Jan Smithers site, but I hope you'll take into account some of the things she said on this weekend's ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and mention, on your site, that the whole Brolin thing didn't happen quite the way you imply.

By the way, I'm pretty certain the ET people must have been reading your site--notice that they described Bailey as "shy and neurotic," just like you do at the beginning of your site!

I grew up with Jan, at least thru 4th Grade, when her family sold their home in Sun Valley, CA. I can remember many days spent at her house playing with our Ginny (pre-Barbie) dolls and being in the Brownies (pre-girl scouts) together. Sometimes helping her mother in the kitchen (I think that her mother was our troop leader) and swimming. Jan was shy, sweet and a good friend and I was very sad when she had to move away. A neighbor used to see her mother and pass along the latest on how Jan was doing. After seeing her interview on ET (2/26) I can see that she is still that girl that I knew then, only now I would used the words--reserved, elegant and still shy (that's not a bad thing).

Great website! Congratulations! I have always loved Bailey Quarters/Jan Smithers too. My wife and I just watched the ET special on WKRP last night. During an interview with Jan, a Jan fan website was mentioned, presumably yours. The interviewer and Jan claimed the site blamed Jan's divorce from James Broslin on his relationship with Barbara Streisand. Jan pointed out that her breakup from Broslin occured 5 years before he met Streisand.

Until May '99, for 6 years as "Mike Walker", I broadcast an interview program called "Open Mike" on KZFR Community Radio, FM 90.1 in Chico Ca. until poor results from a back surgery sidelined me. KZFR is an all volunteer station and is listener supported.

If my memory serves me correctly, I remember enjoying Howard Hessemen (Johny Fever) performing with a comedy improvisational group called "The Committee" in San Francisco back in the late '60's. They were hilarious. The current "Who's line is it anyway" is within the same genre.

I still maintain the KZFR Website: www.kzfr.org and our personal website: www.csuchico.edu/~elupien

I know you have thousands entries in your guest book, but if you care to respond, my e-mail is : elupien@msn.com

Thanks again for creating such a great website!

- Ed

This is going to sound like lecturing, though it isn't intended as such: While it's good that you've taken down most of the disparaging references to James Brolin, I think you probably ought to put up some sort of apology for unwittingly putting out misinformation about Jan Smithers and her marriage. Obviously you didn't intend any harm, but a lot of people, after reading your website, took to saying that Brolin had "dumped" Smithers to marry Streisand--and I think it was clear from her interview on "Entertainment Tonight" that Smithers was upset, or at any rate displeased, at being portrayed as a "victim" dumped by a "cad." We often underestimate the power of the internet, but clearly your site has been influential in ways you couldn't have foreseen and certainly never intended; it must have been something of an unpleasant surprise to find, on national television, that the subject of your fan-worship site not pleased with the influence your site has had. (They didn't mention you by name, of course, but clearly you are the "devoted fan" they were referring to.) Again, this isn't meant as a lecture. But since you put up this website as a tribute to Jan Smithers, it might be a good idea to apologize for having offended her. And I would also advise you to take down *all* disparaging references to James Brolin-- that includes the crack about the "downward move" in marrying Streisand (it's true, it is a downward move, but it's still nasty and it detracts from your site) and the line about Brolin not attending the funeral of Robert Young, and that obviously fake quote from that tabloid about Brolin's finances. Just make this a Jan Smithers site, and leave Brolin out of it, except for factually mentioning that he used to be married to her and that they're now divorced. Perhaps that's what you should have done in the first place.

Good site! I've liked Jan Smithers since her original appearance on the Newsweek cover in 68. Actually found a copy of it when we were cleaning out closets a few years ago but, unfortunately, it went into the trash along with other detritus we accumulated over the years. It's good to know she's such a nice person in real life instead of just another actor/a**hole.

Don't want to cause you any problems because I did enjoy the site, but if N@N can't get the rights to "Tiny Dancer" how did you?

This is a GREAT site!!! As per your other visitors, Bailey was one of my favorite characters on WKRP. (Man she was sexy!) I always wanted to see how the relationship between Fever and Bailey would have developed. I think it would have made for some awesome shows. I'm from Toronto and am proud to see that Jan has settled in Canada. I hope she sees this site soon and responds in kind. Bravo on a job well done and I will visit the site as much as I can. Thanks for the cool read. I dare say this is probably the only website that I have actually had the patience and interest to read every inch. I, too, have always been a huge WKRP fan and partial to Jan. What a great show!

It may interst you to know that I taped almost every single episode of the series off the Canadian CBC network while I was going to school in Vermont in 1993. Not only were they not edited for content, but happily, they also were not edited for time, as are some of the episodes that I had taped a few years earlier in Hartford (they actually cut out lines & some entire scenes, presumably to squeeze in an extra commercial).

Anyway, thanks a lot and keep it up. I'll check back again soon.

Nice stuff! Found you doing a googlesearch for diplomatic license plate codes. I have an actual hardcopy, published by "ICUC Press" of Arlington VA (where we live) in 1989. We track plate codes we've seen, and I was trying to fill in some blank names. Thanks! Looks like yours is more up-to-date than this, so I can't offer any corrections, except that my copy includes "country codes in red on special FBI watch list used by counterintelligence agents to help keep tabs on suspect spies", and contact info to report incidents, crimes, and suspecte spies. Cool! c.

About "The New WKRP In Cincinnati" -- it was actually on for two seasons (1991 to 1993). It was done with the best of intentions (as well as some of the show's original writers and crew members), but it just didn't work. As for where Gary Sandy and Jan Smithers were, here's a quote from Bill Dial (who executive-produced the "New WKRP" but, more importantly, wrote the Thanksgiving episode of the original 'KRP), talking to a newspaper at the beginning of the second season:

Dial's approach is understandable. But when viewers ask about the show, they most often are interested in the connections between the two series. The top question: Will Gary Sandy (Andy Travis) and Jan Smithers (Bailey Quarters), original cast members who so far are unaccounted for, make guest appearances? Dial said both expressed interest, but that Sandy has been busy with stage work, and Smithers, married to actor James Brolin, has been devoting all her time to her family. Dial added, though, that he might have the right script to entice Smithers back to the set, and he's all for continued reunions -- in moderation.

So they did want Jan to appear on the show at least once. I don't know how much it matters that she didn't; the show soon imploded and is deservedly forgotten today.

Hey, I really enjoyed looking at your Jan Smithers page! When I set out to do a WKRP fan section on my webpage I knew the hardest part was going to be finding info about the actors and actresses. Thanks to your wonderful page I know all I needed to know and more about Jan Smithers. I really have come to admire her, for she broke out of her shyness, which I still have to accomplish. Anyways, I really love your page. I have bookmarked it and will be checking every now and then for updates. You wouldn't mind if I use your pictures on my webpage, would you? Feel free to email me to tell me whether it is okay for me to use them on my page or not, because if you don't want me to use them I will take them off. The people of Canada's east coast, that I have known, are a warm, kindhearted and generous people. I am sure that Jan blends in perfectly. I am envious of Nova Scotians to have Jan as a neighbour!

I have to say that Jan is one of the sweetest and kindess I have ever met. I met her and her husband and little girl Molly. It was Feb.1990. When she went back home to Califorina we exchanged addresses and phone numbers. We talked several times by phone. My husband was in the military and we moved to Germany. I lost contact of her after she and Jim separated. I heard about their separation through a tabloid. I was just heart sick. They are both really nice people. I had wondered for years how she was. It's good to know where she is. She deserves nothing more than to have a happy life.

I am so glad to have found your site. I was not born when Jan Smithers first picture was taken in March of 1966. I did not make my debute into the world until November of that year. I was however about 7 or 8 when WKRP in Cincinnati aired. My family NEVER missed an episode. I remember even way back then being more attracted to Jan's Character of Bailey than the character of Jennifer played by Loni Anderson. Later in reruns as I grew older I truly had a crush on Jan Smithers, as well as Barbara Eden, and ... OH Sorry :)

I really enjoy your site because it does not seem as "deranged" as other fan sites for other celebrities I have seen. I did a search of Jan Smithers when I pulled out my tapes I made of N@N's WKRP Marathon, I taped every night, and as I watched them last night, I just wondered... What ever happened to Jan Smithers? On a side note There is a woman that I work with that I have always thought was familiar from the first time I saw her. I have known her for a few years now. It was not until I got to the pictures on your website that I realized why she looked familiar from day one... she looks like Bailey Quarters... Big Glasses and all.

Too bad I don't have a pix to show you, the similarity is uncanny... and she is a shy person. :0) So I am sure she would feel strange by finding a picture of her on the web let alone in my hands. We work in different departments and so see each other and say hi but are not close... Too bad I think you would be amazed.

I have rambled too much thanks for the page and the hard work you put into it.

I can NOT believe Jan Smithers is 50, but I am 33 now....Seeing your page was like a stroll down memory lane. Thanks again

R.S.

Thanks for the website. I, too, preferred Bailey over Jennifer-- I guess I'm type of guy who prefers brains over beauty-- brains last, don't you know.

While I appreciate the fact that one of your regular visitors tried to contact Nick@Nite regarding the absence and reediting of the classic hit records throughout the show's soundtrack (the music in many instances outshone the stars), I strongly doubt that he got the truth from Nick.

I worked at a music publishing company for over seven years, and I know that there's a music publishing clearinghouse that provides and co-ordinates licenses for various uses. In actuality, it's fairly easy to secure a license, as this clearinghouse keeps track of a song's ownership, whether it's "Tiny Dancer" or "Great Balls of Fire".

Since these classic songs have immense nostalgic value, they often lend a great hand in the success of a TV series (can you say "Murphy Brown" boys and girls?). The nostalgia translates into big bucks, especially when you're trying to attract the aging and affluent boomer demographic.

The Powers That Be over at Nick probably figured it was cheaper to edit out the music rather than pay exorbitant license fees for 15 year-old reruns.

WKRP isn't the only victim, though. You can also find examples in the movie "Weird Science" (it pissed me off that they took out "Pretty Woman" during a sequence with Lisa (Kelly Le Brock) at the mall). Apparently, it's not a new practice.

While it's not as palatable a reason as "well, we TRIED to find licenses, but..." it's a lot closer to the truth, IMHO.

About the music licences, and to the guy who wrote the post above mine: The truth is that Nick at Nite had *nothing to do* with the music edits. Nothing. Don't ask me why the Nick at Nite postmaster talked as if Nick was responsible, but here are the facts:

WKRP is currently distributed by 20th Century Fox, and it was the *distributor* that changed the music and dialogue. You can verify this very easily. Buy the 1998 box set of WKRP videotapes from New Video Inc. The music is, in all cases, exactly the same as on Nick--a *year* before Nick started airing WKRP! And the Comedy Network in Canada has the same music as Nick, too. This is it, folks, this is what WKRP's music is now, and it has nothing to do with Nick at Nite.

One more thing: While I too feel irritated with the distributor for their sloppy changes ("terrible dresser" and such), it should be noted that some songs really are unavailable to them (or at least some recordings; remember they have to get the recording as well as the song). Note that there are some episodes where one song is left in and another is removed (like for instance the Thanksgiving episode, where Pink Floyd remains but another musical snippet is missing). If there had been a strict policy of eliminating all songs for money reasons, why would they have bothered to leave in about half the original music (which is more or less what the current package is--half original music, half generic).

Boy, you missed the point! a) Bailey was much more beautiful than Jennifer (look at the close-up of her lovely bespectacled face after Johnny tells her he'd like to take her home and kiss her all over in the dark). And b), Jennifer was the brains of WKRP, smart enough to handle anything. So if you prefer brains, go for Jennifer, while I yearn for the Beauty-- Bailey Quarters.

I have to add my two cents here - that this is *NOT* what KRP's music is now....I know, because WKRP airs here on a local station and I can assure you that our episodes contain 90% of the original music, and I've been able to compare many episodes to Nick's versions *and* to Comedy Network's as well...and while those two station's airings feature the same music, we here are getting the real songs w/ no overdubs of musical dialogue or DJ dialogue with the exception of *very* few episodes...however, in defense of Comedy Network, they may have lost the music, but there episodes contain less edits overall and run longer in length.

Just my two cents!

Yes, but that's an old syndication package, prepared in 1983 or so and distributed by a company called "Victory TV." That package still airs on some stations but gradually seems to be going out of circulation, to be replaced by the newer package with different music (prepared in the mid-'90s).

As I sit at my computer trying to remember what I wanted to "look up" on the net, I remember Jan Smithers. Who I believe to be the most natural beauty on this great Earth. I watched her since I was a little twurp. Not having any info on her what so ever, except the WKRP thing of course. I smiled the biggest smile in a long time when I read that she is in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Which makes her only a meer 40 minutes away, driving the speed limit that is. So the way I look at it now is; So what if she's 20 years older than me. At least NOW I have a shot! P.S, Great site you have going and now I will have to bring my camera the next time I go to Halifax. I'll keep you informed. :} RaNMaN - Truro, Nova Scotia novascotia@mail.com

You still haven't removed certain content regarding James Brolin (funeral, as well as other writings). There is also a lot of material not directly related to Ms. Smithers, that need not be here and, is for the most part, disparaging. You should really remove such content. I am not suprised that Ms. Smithers does not like your website.

What a phenomenal woman. I hope that Jan has either made the time -- or will kindly and generously make the time -- to allow an exceptional artist to capture her exceptional beauty...distinguishing marks and all.

She has clearly touched many hearts and souls with both her inner and outer beauty, and it only seems fitting that this be captured in some timeless way.

True thanks in any case, Jan, for being you. Know that in our own individual and collective ways, we do honestly love you. -- Just_a_man Austin, Texas

Great site! Keep up the good work. BTW, WKRP is running in Canada on the Comedy Network. 10:30AM and 4:30PM Eastern Standard Time.

You're right! Jan Smithers as "Bailey Quarters" was always underrated / overshadowed by Loni Andersen as "Jennifer Marlow". Although blonde buxsom and beautiful too, Jan Smithers always had a wonderful allure to her. If I had to choose between Jennifer and Bailey, no doubt about it, I would have chosen Bailey.

"Bailey" is the type of lady you always want to treat as a lady. The conversations would be meaninful and the emotions of a relationship would be there.

I always pictured Jan being somewhat like Bailey in many ways. Maybe it's an illusion of PR. Who knows?

Glad to hear she lives in Canada! Makes our country that much better! : ) Does anyone out there know if she became a citizen? That would be awesome!

Tony

You wrote [something like]:

"Are the copyright and royalty laws really so weird that they can't show the damn shows as they originally aired?"

I think I've found the problem. Originally, WKRP benefited from an odd rule whereby the music license fees for a videotaped show were lower than the fees for a filmed show. That's why WKRP was videotaped rather than filmed, so they could use a lot of real music. But by the mid-'90s, when the music licenses expired, the rule had also expired-- now music license fees are just as expensive for video as for film. So WKRP's music, which was affordable at the time, is now too expensive to retain *in toto*, because of that rule change.

Hey, great page. I too have been in love with Jan Smithers. Once I saw her on some TV game show like, and she was in a bathing suit in a dunk tank. She went into the tank when the person hit the target with a baseball. When she came up dripping wet, I was smitten forever. Believe me, Loni Anderson does not have that much on her. I wish I could see that picture of her. Do you have it????. Please stay in touch. I have been forever trying to locate her? Thanks, Richard littlerichard55@hotmail.com.

Hi, Scott:

I was doing some research on the cast of WKRP in Cincinnati when I found your website.

It seems that you and I have a lot in common. First, you obviously have at least a passing familiarity with the original Star Trek (your reference to "The Trouble With Tribbles"). But most importantly, the question of "Jennifer or Bailey?"

I've maintained for the last 20+ years that Bailey would be the woman I'd want to date, and that she would be the type of woman I'd want to spend the rest of my life with. I was only 16 when WKRP premiered, but I knew in 1978 that Bailey Quarters was my type. I hoped that someday I'd find someone just like her

As for Jennifer... well, what can I say? To me, women like Jennifer just seem, well, fake! And you're right. Loni Anderson is scary. She might have a brain, but what she does with it is simply a turn-off to me. Jennifer may be a "trophy" (to some, but not me), but Bailey is the prize!

Okay, I'm babbling here. It's 1:30 AM and your website has reminded me of all the reasons I loved (or at least had a crush on) Bailey. I still remember that feeling... and perhaps it would hurt if I hadn't met someone very much like her only a few years ago. I ended up marrying her (I knew I would after only a short time dating her). She, like Bailey, was shy, yet there was (and is) a sincere, feminine quality to her. She's intelligent, but not wiley. We quickly became best friends... and she even wears glasses.

To Jan Smithers, I can only say... Thank you for making me realize early on in my life what kind of woman I wanted to end up with. As a fan, I love you for that... in the purest way. I sincerely hope you are at least as happy as I am... wherever you are, whatever you're doing. God Bless You, Jan Smithers!

If anyone out there has a VHS tape of the complete WKRP "Daydreams" episode, with Bailey's dream (and Jan's big scene) about being President of the United States and married to Johnny, please email me at jaime@weinmans.com; I have a lot of uncut WKRP episodes to trade, or I would gladly pay for a tape of Bailey's dream. Bailey's dream sequence in this episode always gets cut in syndication, which ruins the episode and is darned unfair to Jan as well. That address again is jaime@weinmans.com, if you have that scene, please email me; I'm desperate to find it.

Hello! Just thought I would drop you a note to let you know how much I enjoyed your site. I think the number of hits suggests somethingg about all of us (especially if you ever pictured your girlfriend in a "Black Death" vodka T-shirt). What it suggests is hard to say. I did have a thought on what I feel is a shared complaint by all WKRP fans. Before the show was run on N@N, it was shown syndicated in re-runs here locally, and you couldn't help but notice the hack-job editing from those shows either. It ranged from omitted quotes, to shortened scenes, even all the way to omitted scenes, just so they could fit in a couple of more commercials. Has anyone suggested to the powers that be to market a VHS/DVD library of the episodes much like they do with "M*A*S*H" and the "Star Trek" series. Granted the series didn't have the lengthy run of the other two, however if it beacme for sale in it's ORIGINAL, UNEDITED format, I would certainly buy it. I realize there are certainly some complicated roaylty logistics involved, but if they could be worked out, I think there would be some very happy Jan and WKRP fans out there. I apologize for my long-windedness.

Thanks for the great summary of the life and times of Jan Smithers.

I have always believed Jan to be one of the most beautiful and subtly sexy entertainers ever to grace the screen of the tube.

It's good to hear that apparently she has chosen to lead a "normal" (if being married to a star is normal) life and not prostitute herself like so many others.

I only hope that Jan can appreciate the fact that fans do exist and are not lurking outside her home with cameras ready. Rather, we have a reserved respect for one of our favorite personalities.

It is surprising that a woman's spirit can touch so many far beyond her ability to acknowledge or know. I have not met Jan nor will I have be in her presence. But what the spirit she projected in her short media career touched many of us. A very organic experience that I am sure Jan does not comprehend. I hope that spirit has been as uplifting for her has it has been for us and provides her for more meaningful and creative outlets than did T.V.

Just for the heck of it, I've put up a webpage that collects together some information I compiled about "WKRP In Cincinnati." The URL is:

There are pages on music changes, videos, quotes about the show, a couple of other pages (including, I'm afraid, an attempt to find someone with a videotape copy of a particular episode), and links.

Found your Jan Smithers page. It was nice to find out something about an actress about whom I'd previously known nothing! The "TV Guide" article was particularly interesting. I checked out my WKRP collection, and watched the pilot episodes - Jan's definitely the loveliest woman ever to grace a TV screen! Cheers, and good luck to ya. I think my favourite 'Bailey Quarters moment(s)' came in the episode where Mrs. Carlson had hired a 'radio doctor', Norris Breeze, to evaluate WKRP with an eye to making it a viable operation. The gang decide to give "Mr. Breezy" (Jennifer's name for him) more than enough reason to have them all (well, except for Herb & Les) declared incompetent. He takes the bait, unwittingly bolstering the staff's efforts to keep things just the way they are. Norris is making individual assessments of the station's personnel, and when he gets to Bailey, she is the epitome of the spaced-out flower child. It's great! She plays ol' Norrris like a drum!

I admire the depth of your devotion to Jan. Loni Anderson could never be the girl next door. With Jan, you might have to move to a better part of town, but it was at least a possibility.

Kia Ora (Hello) from New Zealand.

Just to let you know that WKRP has just yesterday (10th May 2000, NZ Time) finished its 2nd entire showing of all 4 seasons on Prime Television in New Zealand (http://www.primetv.co.nz). WKRP has had 2 showings in NZ within 2 Years. The 1st showing (I think I mentioned on your guestbook) started in June of 1999. In both showings they played WKRP in the evenings (the 1st showing at 7pm the 2nd showing 6:30pm) Monday - Friday without a break up of episodes. Each episode rolled onto the next day after the other (if that makes sense). SO if you work it out I think it took about 2 1/2 - 3 months to play all 90 episodes of WKRP.

I work at Radio 1XX in Whakatane, Bay Of Plenty, NZ and played Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" from 1972 a couple of Sunday nights ago. We've got it on CD. A Beautiful song - all 5 and a half minutes of it. I'm going to dig it out again this Sunday just after 7pm and give it a play. And why? 'cause I fell like it. It's such a damn good song. It's a pity we don't broadcast over the net so everyone could hear it. But we don't have the money or the means to do that.

I was in my mid-teens when WKRP was on and I would always be arguing with my friends at school that Bailey was better looking than Jennifer. Blonde hair and breasts always won out in the lunch room, but that never changed my mind. Lets set it straight - Jennifer would be the girl you would want to spend that one night with, Bailey's the one you bring home to mom and stay with forever. (a 'keeper' as my grandfather would put it)

For me there's something about a girl who's not trying to look or talk sexy, but is drop-dead gorgeous that has the most appeal of all. Bailey Quarters was all that, and indications seem to be that Jan Smithers herself has that un-assuming nature.

For years I kind of thought I was the only person in the world would pick Bailey over Jennifer, I guess I need to update that thinking.

As for Jan Smithers, I can imagine that having someone put up a website about you would have to be un-nerving at the least and down-right scary at times. Of course it's meant to be flattering, and I hope one day she decides to use this site to drop a line to her fans. But I also hope that if she decides to maintain her privacy, that it will be glumly accepted with respect.

Respectfully,

jtos@portjervis.com

UNBELIEVABLE!- first NickAtNite puts WKRP in the gravest of time slots: 4:30 AM EST on Monday morning (?!?) and now has completley abondoned the show all together, and has opted to show All In The Family ( like we need to see MORE of this show?). I immediately send in a rather heated but controlled e-mail to Nick trying to understand why they would take it off..in my opinion, it is the only show worth tuning in to that station for. Instead of getting an obligatory form letter, I actually got some feedback, and quite quickly actually, probably because of the amount of disgust I had towards the lousy station in my letter. I receive news that the show gets "low ratings"...yeah well guess what I don't care if they show Jan Smithers nude for 22 minutes, it's still gonna have low ratings at FOUR THIRTY IN THE MORNING RIGHT BEFORE THE START OF THE WORK WEEK. ( ok ok, maybe bad example...but you know what I'm talking about here). It's so ironic that the pattern of putting WKRP on at strange times, and suddenly switching to another night without warning paralleles what actually happened to the show during it's original run 1978-1982. Listen...you put WKRP on at Nick at Nite 5 days a week at 9 PM EST, and it would easily become one off the highest rated shows at Nick..no doubt about that, all it takes is EXPOSURE- all the old fans will come out and the strength of the show with it's brilliant story lines and uncanny chemistry of hillarious and endearing characters would win over younger fans, this is a classic!!. I simply am bewildered by the lack of recognition this show gets, not to mention the butchering of master tapes that edit out whole bits of shows to make room for more commercials-but that's a whole other ball of crap isn't it? I am absolutley pissed off, as I was in the middle of making tapes of the show( something I started to do when E! channel was running it back in the mid 90's, but unfortunatley didn't keep up with it), then they pull the plug. I'm praying for someone to pick this show up, but I ain't holding my breath...I gotta feeling it's going to be awhile, anybody out there got tapes of the show for sale? I need my Bailey fix!!

C.G.

Whenever I hear 'Tiny Dancer', I always flash on Jan. I was so in love with her! Still am, I realized when I found your web-site. I even married a shy gal with similar features. Coincidence? Ahhh. Anyway, I'm royally pissed about the re-editing of music and lines on the show. I didn't know. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The episode where Bailey waits in the studio for a date with Johnny, while he has 'foot powder' on, that's the one that always gets me - "After the love has gone." If they changed that too, it will hurt. -- Jim in Bristol, Vermont

Hi - I'm a big fan of WKRP and Jan (though I'm not obsessed with her). I was browsing for Shawnee Smith (the HOT girl on "Becker") when I saw your site mentioned (on the Yahoo page to search for actors and actresses, last names starting with "S"). I used to have cable (moved from Boston recently), and never realized that Nick at Nite was editing the episodes.

That's mostly because I didn't watch many of them, and they were on for so short a time. I didn't watch many because I have many of my favorites taped on video! And yes, I have the "Tiny Dancer" episode all the JanFans love so much! I taped it from a local Boston TV station, and I believe it's uncut (from my memory of the show) and I know the song and lyrics to "Tiny Dancer" are still intact!

If you and your cohorts would like, you could send me a blank tape and a few bucks for postage, and I could make you a copy. Then you could make it available over your website. (Or it might be easier if you just send me a few extra bucks, and I'll buy a tape here and just send it.) I also have many other episodes, including one in which Bailey was in charge of a Public Service spot (an early episode, I think the first one that featured her), and the one where Les gave her so much trouble about her doing news broadcasts (I call it "Bailey the Broadcaster"). I have many others as well, including one of my faves, "The Pink Frog," and my absolute fave, where CURB tries to censor WKRP, and Carlson quotes Lennon's "Imagine" to the censor guy. If you want, in addition to the "Tiny Dancer" episode, I could tape enough shows to fill up a six hour tape! (I think I have that many, though I'm not sure.)

In any case, I was quite surprised to find the page on Jan Smithers. I am interested in news about her and will check back with your site. Incidentally, why is it called Cloth Monkey?

Please email me at the below address if you are interested in my proposal. If we start corresponding a little, I will have a few questions for you about setting up a website and stuff like that.

My name is Doug May, and I currently live in Traverse City, Michigan. You can email me using padawandoug@go.com or, if that doesn't get a response (though the go.com email works), try emailing me at MMay985531@aol.com (my mom's web account), and put my name at the beginning of the message. Put subject of WKRP or JANSMITHERS on email for immediate attention.

Keep up the good work, and May the Force be with you,

PadawanDoug

To the person who wrote the message above mine, a bit of clarification: The version of WKRP that your local station is showing is the old syndication package, prepared in the '80s when a lot of the music licenses were still intact and licensing the music was cheaper anyway. This package apparently still can be shown by stations that have it, but it's not actually being sold anymore and is gradually going out of circulation. But it's not Nick at Nite's fault that the music and dialogue were changed in their version. However, the version of the episode you have, while much less edited than Nick's version, is still a "cut version," since each episode in that package cuts about two minutes, as is customary in syndication.)

Impressive. I remember the watching the premiere of WKRP. Been keeping tabs on the Jan Smithers site for the better part of a year. Always preferred her over Loni Anderson hands down. Also nice to see that those of us of "a certain age" can be web proficient and one doesn't need to be 19 and pierced to have a website. Liked the Bluto Blutarski quotes, the Reason for Living and the kudos to Nick Lowe and Rockpile. However, found the Libertarian plug and the anti-Clinton bit a little disconcerting. When he finally steps down, I don't know what you Yanks are going to find to get wound up about. All in all, though, nice stuff and I intend to return. Keep up the good work. I always thought that Bailey Quarters, Jan Smithers was the most intriguing and sexiest charter on WKRP.

Glad you went to the trouble of "finding out the truth" about how alot of us felt about her.

She was beguiling (sic) and funny.

"I think the rest of this Jan Smithers site of mine makes it abundantly clear that the "drooling fan" of the title is meant tongue in cheek. "

Yes, Clothmonkeyman, but whose tongue and whose cheek? Four pages devoted to an admittedly very cute but less-than-minor actress catapult you into stalkerdom.

Good call on the Quirky chicks. Your list of "hot but I can't tell you why" women is close to my own. The mass-culture, mall-beauties are so flawless as to be completely uninteresting.

I don't think that's fair to the person who runs this site. For one thing, she's hardly the only minor actor or actress to have a webpage devoted to her. Second, when this Jan Smithers page started, he had only one page. It's expanded since then because people kept sending him more information, and people kept sending him more information because there is no information available about her elsewhere. What was he supposed to do, refuse to put up the TV Guide article because that would be stalking? It's an interesting article and I'm glad he put it up.

Jan Smithers is obviously a minor actress, but on the other hand she was on a TV show that is a favorite with a lot of people, and her character was a favorite with a lot of viewers. In that sense, this page should really be "The Bailey Quarters Page," because (as the webmaster himself admits) the character of Bailey is more important than the actress who played her. But then WKRP (one of the best sitcoms ever) is more important than any of the individual actors who were on it (none of whom are exactly "major" actors).

My slightly obscure point is that four pages' worth of information does not count as stalkerdom.

From one Jan fan to another, I also think Jan was the good-looking one on WKRP, and still is to this day(although Loni did something for me too, but in a whole other dimension). I saw the Entertainment Tonight show for the second time tonight(6-19-00) and that's how I found out there was a website for Jan and did a search to find it. Seeing Jan on ET after all these years, she still makes me sweat! She is still the most sweet looking woman that she ever was, and probably will always be. K.Hogan, Broken Arrow, OK P.S. I agree with everyone else about the way the "KRP" episodes have been decimated by the horrible editing.

I fell in love with Bailey Quarters/Jan Smithers when I began watching WKRP in Cincinatti when it first came out many years ago, and seeing her again when the series was recently re-run on the Comedy Network here in Canada deepened the fondness I felt for her character. I've always had a soft spot for the shy, bookish, "sexy Librarian" type. Like you say on your site--which is great, I might add--it's a Ginger/Mary-Anne type thing. Loni Anderson's character, Jennifer Marlowe, was wonderful--gorgeous, glamourous, funny, and sexy as all get out--and all the men who encountered her tripped over themselves going ga-ga at her obvious charms. But Jan's character Bailey was much more subtle, and in my books, sublimely beautiful. It's like comparing Beethoven's 9th Symphony and de Bussey's Claire de Lune, both are gorgeous, beautiful, and wonderful, but for very different, yet not entirely dissimilar reasons and effects. Usually in the background, Bailey was nevertheless just as lovely and feminine as Jennifer, albeit in a subdued, beautiful-girl-next-door kind of way; and she became even more so as her look evolved from the quiet, brunette, churchmouse of the early episodes into a more self-confident, even fiesty, sun-dappled blonde beauty of the final season, who even let it openly be known when she found a man attractive--quite the change. I was happy for Bailey when she stood up to others for herself or for projects she believed in, because the changes those kind of actions bring inevitably make a person more interesting. But despite her change of image, outwardly and inwardly, she was, and always remained, the basically shy, kind-hearted girl we've all come to love. I'm a dedicated bachelor, but if a girl like Bailey Quarters came into my life, I might just forget myself and hustle her off to a justice-of-the-peace pretty damn quick!

I was surprised to learn of Jan's taking up residence in Nova Scotia (I've been to the Maritimes many years ago, but find I prefer the mountains of British Columbia or the tremendous space of the Prairies myself). I don't know if she has taken, or plans to take citizenship here, but in lieu of that, a much belated welcome to Canada, Jan!

Sincerely,

Neil Hodgins, Whitby, Ontario e-mail: neil_hodgins@hotmail.com

Hi Scott--

*Superduper* page! You and I are almost in perfect agreement on everything, especially the "Heroes" section. The only thing I'd argue with you about is that any fool knows Jennifer beats Bailey hands down. Not to detract from Bailey, but we're talking a PT boat vs a battleship here. Thanks again!

It seems the one thing we all have in common is that each of us had no idea the others were out there! I was first introduced to WKRP via late afternoon syndication reruns on WCAX in Burlington, VT. My kids had found it and were glued to the set every afternoon, so I had to find out what was going on. That's when I became a Bailey fan.

Power to N@N for all those glorious revivals. I agree that it's a shame some of them have to be mutilated, but that's the way it is. Change the rules!

As a kid, the box of books I got was from my father and it was the original Tom Swift. Besides Jules Verne they were about the only old books that I ever liked. I mostly remember that when presented with a problem they went to the lab and solved it - no meetings to ask 'mother-may-i', no commissions, no grants, no subsidies, no government. I'm trying to locate some old copies mostly out of curiousity about how the culture is portrayed. Also, like you, I was quite distressed to find out that Victor Appleton was an in-house name.

Hi. I've revisited your Jan Smithers page, and read through the old guestbooks for the first time, so most of the comments were new to me. Apart from the occasional crackpot, it does seem that, however expressed, most message posters regard the character of Bailey Quarters with affection and understandably admire the looks and talent of Jan Smithers the actress.

Like a number of readers of the page, I watched KRP as a teenager - unfortunately, it was only shown over here (the U.K.) as a schedule filler between 1980 and 1984, criminal really. The first episode I happened to see was "Bailey's Show", and, at my young, impressionable age, first came across this outstandingly pretty, warm-voiced young woman. It was a case of "this is just the way my perfect girlfriend would be". The way Jan played Bailey, however much of herself there was (or wasn't) in the portrayal, caused me a few longing sighs in those days. Still does today, as a matter of fact, even after 20 years of life's ups and downs!

Much as I enjoyed the show and the presence in the cast of Jan, it proved impossible to find out anything about her until I came across this web page. Its very interesting contents have provided some fascinating background. Keep it going if you can, Scott.

I think that all of her fans would hope that, at some point, Jan might make a personal contribution or input of some kind to the page. I guess that this would seem to be unlikely at best, which is a shame!

In the end though, I think it's clear that if she wishes to live a quiet life out of any sort of limelight, it's something that should be fully respected. Her personal privacy is of paramount importance and everyone who has enjoyed her on-screen performances should not lose sight of that.

Tha above is abridged from my 50,000 word thesis - Jan Smithers:Woman of the Century (just kidding)

All the best, Chris Salderban, Nottingham, England e-mail: janfan@supanet.com

RE: Jennifer vs Bailey

I don't think any sane person can even seriously ask this question. I cringe a little as I try to imagine what it would be like to run my fingers through Jennifers seemingly bullet resistant hair, and I positively shudder to think what kind of make-up residue would be left on the pillow the next morning. Speaking of next mornings, can you imagine what that face must look like devoid of makeup? Honestly, "Jennifer vs Bailey" is only a slightly less absurd question than "Andy vs Bailey". Bailey, on the other hand, is not only stunning but looks like a real live woman... not an overly
